A NEW Thing

“This month shall be your beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year to you.” Exodus 12:2

If you’re anything like me, then change doesn’t come easily to you. In fact, you probably have a box of cherished memories from the past decade, goodbyes are always hard for you, and beginnings are a bit scary.

So naturally when God says, “Behold, I will do a new thing” you probably don’t think He means new new, right? But turns out He actually does.

I was reading the passover story of the children of Israel a couple nights ago, and something struck me when I read the verse above in Exodus. God literally just came in and interrupted their calendar timeline and said, “Okay, this is the first month of your year…. Umm, no God, were actually in April, it’s the fourth month…” When God spoke those words to the children of Israel, in our calendar year it would actually be March or April. Can you imagine? With these words, came the realization that God can start a new thing at any point in our lives and when He says new, He means NEW.

We may be in April, but I have a feeling God is declaring those same words over us. I have a feeling He wanted to interrupt our timeline and do something new in us. And let’s all be honest, we could use a fresh start because 2020 has sucked thus far. The disastrous meme’s going around about this year are hilarious and on point. So, I’m okay with starting this year all over again.

Now obviously our calendar year is not going to change and I hope you capture what I’m trying to say… or what He might be trying to say, “Forget the former things, don’t even consider the things of old, I’m doing something new.” Don’t look back. Forget the things you thought you wanted or the things you expected to happen. Forget the disappointments and discouragements that came along with that. Forget the plans you had and the striving that came with that. Forget the times people overlooked you, offended you or left you.  Forget the shame, the anger and the sadness that has lingered long enough.  Forget everything that keeps you longing for things in the past because God has way better in the future. He can’t show you the new that’s ahead if you’re looking back. Don’t be like Lot’s wife who looked back with longing and turned into a pillar of salt; hard, stuck, immovable because she couldn’t let go. Let go and let God do this NEW thing in you.

What better time for new beginnings then passover week? Over 2000 years ago, around this time, Jesus was just a few days away from dying on the cross for us. He died so that we could have NEW life in Him. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a NEW creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become NEW.” 2 Corinthians 5:17.

The new is here, friends! Whatever this ‘new thing’ may look like for you, maybe a new season, a new job, a new relationship, or for some of you a renewed walk with Christ. Let’s forget the things of the past. Don’t even consider them, look ahead, and although beginnings can be a bit scary  they can also be really exciting! With new things, come new friendships, new dreams, new passions, new personal growth and best of all… new mercies for each day!
